Italian, 19th century
Cupid with a Butterfly
marble

height 36 ¾ in.; 93.3 cm.
The present work is one of a small group of marbles that was carved after Carlo Finelli's Cupid with a Butterfly which was purchased by the 6th Duke of Devonshire to display at Chatsworth house. Finelli's marble remains in that illustrious collection of Ancient and Neoclassical marbles today. The 6th Duke was a prolific patron of Italian sculptors during the first decades of the 19th century, including Antonio Canova (1757 - 1822), and it is recorded that he purchased Cupid with a Butterfly from Finelli in memory of Canova.
