A Roman Marble Group of Dionysos and a Satyr
circa 1st Century A.D., with late 18th/early 19th Century Restorations
the youthful god standing with the weight on his right leg and resting his left arm on a young satyr, his head turned to the right, his hair tied in a fillet passing over the forehead, surmounted by a wreath of berries and ivy leaves, gathered in a chignon at the back, and falling in long curls over the shoulders; the satyr advancing with his left leg forward, embracing the god's waist with his right arm, raising his eyes to him, cradling a lagobolon in his left arm, and wearing a wreath of pine cones and needles; the god's support decorated in relief with vine tendrils and clusters of berries, a panther with the left paw resting on the head of a sheep seated next to the support; the satyr's support decorated with panpipes hanging from a gnarl; restored are the plinth, panther, the lower two-thirds of the god's support, both of his legs from above the knees and left lower arm, and the entire satyr except for his right lower arm; the god's right arm formerly restored.
Height 65 cm.
Iconographically related groups are in Florence (https://arachne.dainst.org/entity/1066047) and in Venice (https://arachne.dainst.org/entity/1081764). A torso of Dionysos from a similar group was sold at Sotheby’s, London, December 7th, 2021, no. 61.
The restorations are inspired by a group of Dionysos and a satyr discovered in Frascati in 1769 and bought by the Vatican in 1776: https://arachne.dainst.org/entity/1079820. Their extent and quality (note the finely incised fur of the sheep’s head and the carefully carved vine tendrils of the support) are outstanding.
