Description
Circle of Sir Anthony van Dyck
Portrait of Charles II, later Prince of Wales, full-length, in an equestrian costume and holding a feathered hat, standing before a balustrade
oil on canvas
canvas: 58¼ by 37 in.; 148 by 94 cm.
framed: 66½ by 45 in.; 169 by 114.3 cm.
This portrait is inspired by Anthony van Dyck's full-length portrait of Charles II as an eleven-year-old boy in a military surcoat, datable to 1641.1 Van Dyck also painted Charles II around the same time in a full suit of armor, a painting which was sold at Sotheby's London, 5 December 2018, lot 29.2 Here, the artist added riding boots to Charles's outfit and placed him in front of a distant landscape, suggesting a connection to the grand hunting and equestrian portraits Van Dyck had painted of the prince's father, Charles I. The full-length portraits of Charles II are among the final commissions completed by Van Dyck before his death in 1641.
