This signed and elegantly composed still life was painted in the 1660s by Cornelis de Heem, who trained in Antwerp with his father, Jan Davidsz. de Heem, but who was active throughout the Northern and Southern Netherlands. Like the works of his father, Cornelis’s still lifes often featured an array of expensive items, many of which underscored the importance of the exotic goods imported into the vast maritime empire of the Dutch Republic.

We are grateful to Fred Meijer for endorsing the present attribution on the basis of digital images, and for suggesting this work was painted in the 1660s.
