Description
Attributed to the Master of the Legend of Saint Lucy
circa 1435 - 1506/09 Bruges
Saint Margaret of Antioch and a kneeling donor figure in a Gothic church
indistinctly dated upper left: 14(81?)
oil on panel, unframed
panel: 19⅝ by 9 in.; 49.8 by 22.9 cm.
This panel once formed the right wing of a devotional triptych, and it is a recent addition to the corpus of the Master of the Legend of Saint Lucy, an anonymous artist active in Bruges from the 1480s into the early years of the sixteenth century. This artist's eponymous work, which illustrates scenes from the life of Saint Lucy, is today in the Church of Saint James in Bruges and is datable to about 1480.1 The facial types of the two figures in the present panel are closely comparable to those found in this artist's painting of the Virgin Among the Virgins in the Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels (inv. no. 2576).2
We are grateful to Peter van den Brink for his assistance in the cataloguing of the present lot and for suggesting the attribution after first-hand inspection.
