Description
Workshop of Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt
Delft 1567 - 1641
Portrait of Frederick Hendrick (1584-1647), Prince of Orange and Stadholder of the United Provinces
oil on panel, a fragment
panel: 13⅝ by 9 in.; 34.6 by 22.9 cm.
framed: 21⅝ by 17 in.; 54.9 by 43.2 cm.
This small, refined panel—most probably a fragment of a larger composition—is a workshop variant of Michiel van Mierevelt's Portrait of Frederick Hendrick, Prince of Orange in the Museum Prinsenhof, Delft (inv. no. PDS 68c).1 It also likely relates to another prototype, now lost, by Mierevelt of about 1610.
The Delft artist Michiel van Mierevelt was one of the most accomplished Netherlandish portrait painters in the early 17th century. After being appointed official painter to the Stadholder Court, Mierevelt produced portraits of prominent Delft figures, including members of the House of Orange. The composition to which the present panel relates was among his most famous and is known today in many variations and copies, some of which, like the present panel, were executed by the master's bustling workshop.
