Circle of Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci called Perugino

This panel is a petite version of Perugino's Madonna del Sacco (Florence, Palazzo Pitti, inv. no. 219), so named for the cloth carrying sack on which the Christ Child sits. Popular since its execution circa 1495-1500, the painting was widely copied around the turn of the sixteenth century. The earliest adaptation is likely a tondo in the Liechtenstein Princely Collections, Veinna (inv. no. 276), attributed to Perugino's workshop. Other versions are in the Ca d'Oro in Venice, the Duomo in Trento, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nancy, among other repositories.
