Joseph Hermann based this composition on a painting by Antonio Fernández Arias (1614 - 1684) in the Cathedral of Málaga, Spain. A larger version of Arias' painting is in the Augustiner Museum, Freiburg, suggesting that Hermann could have seen that version in Germany.
