Given their heavy weight, necklaces in ancient Sumba were also not for personal adornment but socioreligious purposes. Primarily composed of a finely woven gold chain, this kanatar features flared terminals, containing complex yet delicate spirals, shaped to resemble the open mouth of a naga. On each end, three smaller chains ending in elaborate filigree motifs descend from the ‘mouth’. These flowing ceremonial chains were bestowed upon nobility as a royal badge of office. Due to the fear of gold’s potent lethality, some personal slaves may have worn them on behalf of their masters.
Compare a royal gold chain of similar design illustrated in Anne Richter, The Jewelry of Southeast Asia, London, 2010, pl. 232.
