This auction includes three cord fasteners, namely lots 1033, 1060, 1071. These objects are a mystery to scholars, their functions are clouded by speculation. The three objects here are finely decorated, featuring a two-tier, three-tier, and four-tier design, all of them incised with concentrated grooves. In the past, they have been recognised as earrings, but upon further research, the hypothetical consensus surrounding their function is that they are cord decorations on clothes. Javanese gods and nobility very often wore clothes featuring an emphasis on cords, and the common speculation is that these objects acted as fasteners tightening the cord around the wearer’s waist, or as weighted ornaments to make sure the cord hung vertically.
