Description
Takahashi Shotei (Hiroaki, 1871-1945)
Mount Fuji (Fujisan)
Taisho period, early 20th century
woodblock print, sealed Shotei, no publisher's mark but published by Watanabe Shozaburo, circa 1920, first state, stamped number 325 in Japanese to verso
Horizontal mitsugiriban: 17.1 x 37.4 cm., 6¾ x 14¾ in.
We are near the grounds of a shrine; nestled among the towering cedar trees and foliage, a torii gate and stone lanterns indicate the approach to a place of worship. The effect of the heavy mist around Mount Fuji is achieved mostly by leaving the area of cloud unprinted so that the undulating vapour appears a warm paper white. Such tranquil scenes of landscapes of an old Japan, unadulterated from the burgeoning modernity of his age, are typical of Shotei's early work with his publisher Watanabe Shozaburo (1885-1962).
