Enjoying the Evening Cool at Okawa (Okawa no suzumi)

Taisho period, early 20th century

woodblock print, with artist's gourd-shaped seal Shotei, two square black seals, no publisher's mark but published by Watanabe Shozaburo, circa 1920

Vertical mitsugiriban: 37 x 16 cm., 14½ x 6¼ in.

During the Edo period (1603-1863), the lower course of the Sumida River was often referred to as the Okawa, or Great River. Here, a lady stands to the edge of a boat holding an uchiwa fan aloft, faintly printed in soft blue tones. On the opposing bank, lantern lights emanate from riverside teahouses and establishments.
