woodblock print, embellished with metallic pigment, signed in pencil in Roman script Kiyoshi Saito, titled, numbered and dated in pencil to the bottom margin Milk, 26/50, 1949, the reverse sealed Kiyoshi and with paper slip affixed to the reverse Self-carved self printed K. Saito and sealed Kiyoshi

Saito's work garnered a following among Americans who visited Japan during the Occupation. He soon exhibited his work around 1945 alongside his contempoaries Hiratsuka Un'ichi (1895-1997) and Kawanishi Hide (1894-1965) at a gallery near the Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial Hotel. A few years later he received his first prize for the present design Milk at the Salon Printemps Exhbition that had been organised by a circle of GHQ officials to support young Japanese artists in 1949.
