These works depict Chinese genre scenes derived from Gabriel Huquier's (1695–1772) Scènes de la vie chinoise, a series of engravings dated circa 1742 based on drawings by François Boucher (1703–1770). The present canvases are respectively derived from La Lecture and LeCarillon. Examples of both engravings are conserved at the Metropolitan Museum, New York.11
