Plakat, Farblithographie, 1911, Zustand B+, auf zwei verbundenen Blättern aufgelegt, gerahmt
Klinger studied art in Vienna, and worked in Berlin for the printer and publisher Hollerbaum & Schmidt, as well as for the satiric magazine Lustige Blätter. He was an innovative, versatile and prolific graphic artist, recognized as one of the best poster artists and illustrators working in pre-War Berlin.
For Klinger, humour had an important link to illustration, and he recognised its power to garner the public's attention. Klinger seemed to take satisfaction in opposing the seriousness and intellectualism of the fine arts via the medium of the poster. In this ad for the printers Hollerbaum and Schmidt, Klinger took aim at his own profession, depicting himself and the company’s other designers as cacti.
