In the world of Patek Philippe, a selection of blue chip watches will always be known and coveted amongst collectors, old guard and new. These include iconic and well-read models like the Reference 1518, 2499, 2526, and 3450. It is only recently that collectors have begun to embrace neo-vintage models with the same kind of fervor as these historical greats. Of these neo-vintage models is the Reference 3970 which was first launched in 1986 as the third perpetual calendar chronograph wristwatch made in series by the firm.

The model replaced the long running holy grail, the Reference 2499, and was most noticeable for it's new caliber CH 27-70Q, a heavily modified Lemania 2310 movement. Indeed, we can consider the Reference 3970 as a transitional model which is imbued with the traditional aesthetics of the firm while incorporating new technologies and modern design components such as the sapphire display back.

The model was in production for 18 years, seeing 4 series with subtle changes to the case and dial. Within this period, about 2000 pieces were made in total, with platinum pieces being the rarest of them all. Of these total pieces made, less than 10% have returned to the market today.

Even more rare is the present lot; a limited edition re-release of the Reference 3970 made only in platinum for the 2015 Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition at the Saatchi gallery in London. The model was limited to only five pieces, making the present lot an exceedingly rare example to come to market. To the best of our research, this is only the second 2015 edition to appear.

We are delighted to offer the present lot which fresh to the market, and offered from the original owner, complete with its winding presentation box, large leather folio, instructional manuals, and certificate that is dated 10 July, 2015, and sold from the Patek Philippe Salon in London.
