Manufactured for just over two years, between approximately 1956 to 1958, the reference 6536 marks the golden age of dive watches. to not feature crown guards together with its sister reference 6538, the 6536 demonstrated a number of design features, including the omission of 'crown guards', which defined the chapter of early Rolex Submariners. The 6536 employed the thin 37 mm Oyster case, and is considered one of the ‘James Bond’ submariners, sported by the character in several of the Bond films.
The reference 6536 can be considered a foundation model, one that featured many attributes that are quintessential to the Submariner and are still present on models to this day: the Mercedes hands, a rotating outer bezel graduated to 15 minutes, and a black dial with a triangular index at 12 o’clock. The present watch comes fitted with a ‘ghost’ bezel, the insert having aged from the traditional black to grey. The lacquer dial has aged consistently, but remains glossy and well preserved.
The present watch marks a compelling buy for any discerning collector who wishes to acquire an historic Submariner.
