Enameling embraces a wide range of traditional techniques, the most complex of these is the precious miniature painting on enamel, a renowned Genevan specialty reserved for a few exceptional pieces. Cloisonné enameling is used to create splendid multicolored decorations. It consists of tracing the outline of the design in fine gold wire and then filling the cells formed by the wire partitions with colored enamel powders. These are vitrified by successive firings in a kiln at temperatures exceeding 800°C.
