Digging deep before the domination of Rolex sports watches, treasure reveals. Exceptionally rare to see a calendar watch with the Rolex logo printed on the dial, reference 6062 is one of two Rolex models to feature an automatic triple calendar complication with moon phases. Unlike the non-Oyster brother reference 8171, the current piece is even more impressive with a waterproofed screw down case back, making it one of the rarest and most complicated models ever made by the maison. Only 5 years after the first Datejust, the complicated reference 6062 made its debut at Baselworld in 1950 and was discontinued after 3 short years of production. With estimated 350 pieces made in total, most were manufactured in yellow gold and stainless steel, however, pink gold is the real gem and the rarest of all with about 50 examples ever sold.
Often regarded as the ‘Stelline’, meaning “little star” in Italian, it features wonderful star-shaped hour markers which is the most appealing dial variation across the reference. Sophisticatedly designed, day and month are displayed in twin apertures at 12 o'clock while the date is indicated on the periphery of the dial by a handsome spear-like hand. Not to mention the dial is fully completed by the magical moon phases which are made of phenomenally crafted blue champlevé enamel on a gold disc.
Highly coveted, collectors drooled at the tremendous rarity and significance of this unconventional timepiece as examples had achieved record prices in recent years. Complete with box and certificate, the current reference 6062 is exceptionally valuable and sought-after as it embodies features to be the pinnacle in vintage Rolex collecting, surely one of the most prestigious timepieces ever created.
