Ulysse Nardin

To celebrate their 175th anniversary in 2021, Ulysse Nardin released a fascinating take on a desk timepiece, the UFO. Somewhat reminiscent of their deck, or marine, chronometers the movement of the UFO, encased largely in glass, has no specific foundation nor legs to support it. Instead it's base is weighted allowing it to balance on its centre point. What is more the timepiece has the ability to rock, from side to side, always returning to an upright position further evoking the company's maritime past.  

It features a triangular configuration of 6 barrels providing it with a staggering one year power reserve, and through its three independent dials the user can display three independent time zones. Its capsule, part glass and part brushed metal, is modern but reserved and as such, while it is sure to stand out, it remains incredibly versatile in how it will fit into a room or space of any style. It is very much a desk timepiece, though simultaneously, a tremendous piece of design and kinetic sculpture.

The UFO was made as a limited edition of 75 pieces all of which sold even before the timepiece's official launch. The present example, number 49, is the second blue UFO ever to appear on the market. An orange example was uniquely made for Only Watch in 2021 and sold for 380,000 CHF.
