A combination of lotus and mandarin ducks symbolises marital harmony and the design often appears on pieces presented to newlywed couples. A bowl of this design from the collection of Dr Simon Kwan was included in the exhibition Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1983, cat. no. 31; and another pair illustrated in Geng Baochang, Ming Qing ciqi jianding [Appraisal of Ming and Qing Porcelain], Hong Kong, 1993, pl. 516.
