A combination of lotus and mandarin ducks symbolises marital harmony and the design often appears on pieces presented to newlywed couples. A bowl of this design from the collection of Dr Simon Kwan was included in the exhibition Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1983, cat. no. 31; and another pair illustrated in Geng Baochang, Ming Qing ciqi jianding [Appraisal of Ming and Qing Porcelain], Hong Kong, 1993, pl. 516. Compare also two similar bowls of Daoguang mark and period sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 31st October 1995, lot 516; 28th April 1998, lot 821; and 5th April 2017, lot 3704.
