According to The Decorative Arts and Crafts of Nantucket (Charles H. Carpenter, Jr., Dodd, Mead, and Co., New York, 1987, p. 203), codfish trade signs and weathervanes are specific to Massachusetts-particularly in the coastal areas of Massachusetts and Nantucket. A similar weathervane is illustrated and discussed in Robert Bishop, Judith Reiter Weissman, et. al., Folk Art (Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1983), fig. 179, 180.
