Fine Silk-Silk Embroidered Mourning Picture: to the Sacred Memory of Cornelius Dunham

Housed in a period gilt and ebonized wood frame with Boston label on verso backboard, the scene depicting a mother with a young girl and three boys at the tomb inscribed Sacred To the Memory of Cornelius Dunham Who Died Nov. 7, 1796 AE 47 under a weeping willow with an American barque in the background.

Height 20 1/4 in. by Width 20 1/4 in.

When Cornelius Dunham III was born on 1 August 1780, in Abington, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States, his father, Captain Cornelius Dunham II, was 31 and his mother, Lydia Atwood, was 26. He died on 7 November 1796, in his hometown, at the age of 16, and was buried in Abington, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States.
