The arms are those of Galloway quartering Abernethy, Brehin and Stewart with Douglas in pretence as granted to Archibald James Edward Douglas, 1st Baron Douglas of Douglas (10 July 1748 – 26 December 1827), grandson of James, 2nd Marquess of Douglas (1646? - 25 February 1700). This salver almost certainly belonged to the Baron’s second son, the Hon. Charles Douglas (26 October 1775 – 10 September 1848), who became 3rd Baron Douglas upon the death of his elder brother, Archibald, 2nd Baron Douglas (25 March 1773 – 27 January 1844). He was admitted as a barrister to Lincoln’s Inn Fields in 1802 and was Conservative M.P. for Lanark from 1830 to 1832.

‘Lord Douglas died on Monday last, at his town residence in St. George’s-place, after a short illness. The deceased, Charles Douglas, Baron Douglas, of Douglas Castle, county Lanark, in the peerage of Great Britain, was second son of Archibald, first Lord Douglas, by Lady Lucy Graham, daughter of William, second Duke of Montrose. He was born Oct. 26, 1775, and was consequently in his 73d year, and was unmarried, as was his brother Archibald, on whose death in January, 1844, he succeeded to the family honours and estates.’ (Morning Advertiser, London, Thursday, 14 September 1848, p. 2b)
