LARGE GLOBE OF MARS
16-inch Visual-Relief Mariner 9 Mars Globe. Chicago: Denoyer-Geppert Co., 1973.
16-inch diameter globe comprised of 12 paper gores, 1/16,700,000 scale. [WITH]: Original wooden cradle mount. Artwork by J. Inge, U.S.G.S. Mapping and Cartography by the Branch of Astrogeology, United States Geological Survey. Some minor wear commensurate with age.
First edition of this large, visual relief globe created using data acquired by the Mariner 9 probe, launched on May 30, 1971 and sent back to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Pasadena, Ca.
The remarkable images returned by Mariner 9 revealed an incredibly rocky landscape reminiscent of the lunar surface. After completing its final transmission on October 27, 1972, Mariner 9 had returned 7,329 photos and mapped 85% of the Red Planet.
