Grumman Specification LSP-270-821A...Tank Assembly, Supercritical Helium, Storage and Supply, Descent Propulsion Design Control... [Bethpage, New York: Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, 1966.]

Approximately 176 pages (8 1/2 x 11 in.), including one folding chart and several pages stapled to inside cover. Prong-bound into the original blue Grumman paper covers, "GIMSON" written in manuscript in black ink to upper cover; some wear to extremities, light rusting to prongs touching inside covers, Small portion of lower right corner torn away.

A HISTORIC LOOK AT THE ENGINEERING BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE APOLLO LUNAR MODULE WITH EXTENSIVE NOTES, CORRECTIONS, AND AMENDATIONS FROM ONE OF ITS LEAD ENGINEERS

This Tank Assembly Manual references the technical specifications, notes, and corrections relating to the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM). With several handwritten adjustments and calculations by Mr. Alvin Gimson, Cognizant Engineer, this document demonstrates the extensive amount of care the NASA sub-contractors took while creating the Lunar Module.

Technical specifications state "the requirements for a supercritical helium storage and supply tank assembly...When connected to an external heat exchanger (See Lot 60)[...], the assembly shall supply helium at specified rates and temperature to the propulsion pressurization system in the descent stage of the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) of the Apollo Spacecraft." (EDP Sheet No. 2).

As NASA and several international agencies gear up for the return of crewed missions to the Moon in the Artemis program, the LEM Tank Assembly Manual presented here is a timely look at the engineering innovations that laid the groundwork to the Moon.
