"...The United States has been the prisoner of its own past. If it had given us firm support in the first weeks after Nasser seized the Suez canal, he could have been called to order and international authority restored over the Canal. However, the United States would not help and Nasser was allowed to get away with it. This encouraged the other petty dictators-first Soekarno, then Castro. Now the United States has a life-time decision on its hands..."
