Description
Sir Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon
Autograph letter signed, to Lord Beaverbrook
about the Suez crisis, welcoming the support he has found in the British press, and the indications of "a movement our way" in America, but rejecting Eisenhower's proposal of sanctions against Israel, which in his view will not gain Arab goodwill, but merely raise the Arab price; also expressing the hope that Britain will wholeheartedly oppose any act of pressure against Israel ("...Here surely is an issue upon which we could unite the country or at least divide the opposition..."), thanking Beaverbrook for his support, 3 pages, 8vo, c/o Prime Minister, New Zealand, 24 February 1957, hole punch marks
"...Eisenhower and Dulles with their projected support of sanctions against Israel grow madder every day. I would like to see us flat out against any act of pressure upon Israel in Aqaba. Let Nasser disgorge the Canal first...Dulles appears to think that by bulling Jews (or French or British) he will gain Arab goodwill. He will merely raise the Arab price. This may not matter so much to the U.S., but could ruin us..."
