One of Mr. Genta’s most important contributions to high watchmaking, this watch, which emulated the chimes of London’s Big Ben, was a first in many ways and included more than a thousand individual parts. Minute repeater, Westminster four-hammer chime, perpetual calendar, dual power reserve display, this watch is a true masterpiece of watch engineering that few have matched to this day. Before this, the Grand Sonnerie had only existed as a pocket watch. Genta made 20 in total, each of which is unique.
The present lot was hand painted by Genta in 1994 and is a true masterpiece. Again, designed in consultation with the Sultan of Brunei, this watch also has the pyramid form case to accommodate the 1,000 parts of the movement and to avoid the case being too thick. The present design is rarest still as it features the side profile of the case as well.
