In 1945, on the occasion of its 40th birthday, Rolex presented a model that is still today one of the most famous and popular watches in the world, a piece that is considered as the perfection in its category, the watch many collectors would choose if they had to have only one watch: the Datejust.
The original reference of the Datejust is the 4467, of which the present lot is an example. Its back is rounded, similarly to the Bubble back, hence its nickname Ovettone (big egg in Italian).
While it was still an experimental era, with many evolutions throughout the years, all the 4467 share some common characteristics, such as the thin milled bezel, most of them had a Rolex + Oyster crown and were fitted on a jubilee bracelet.
The offered example has remained in the same private collection for over 30 years and shares these characteristics. It is interesting to notice that the gold Jubilee bracelet is heavier compared to some later ones. The clasp does not bear the Rolex crown on the outside but it is duly signed inside. Its dial bears the Datejust signature, suggesting it was replaced a few years later.
Rarely appearing at auction, this lot is an opportunity to acquire the original reference of the Datejust.
