Description
A rare large Arita dish with crests
Edo period, late 17th century
the deep dish with wide rim decorated in underglaze blue, the centre with a swirled brocade obi decorated with wisteria and chrysanthemums and a lobed panel with presentation flowers among chrysanthemums, the rim with lotus flowers and scrolling foliage, the reverse with bamboo roundels, fitted wood storage box
55.5 cm., 21⅞ in. diam.
The nine-leaf bamboo grass crest (kumai sasa mon) comprises of three clusters of stylised bamboo grasses. The family crest is often associated with the Takenaka clan, daimyo of the Takada and then Funai Domains in Bungo Province, before becoming vassals of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
