Description
A rare Arita apothecary bottle
Edo period, late 17th century
of typical form with broad body and tall neck, decorated in underglaze blue with a tasseled garland and characters I.S. and H.B
25 cm., 9¾ in. high
Such apothecary bottles comprise an interesting group of Dutch export porcelain. Oftentimes decorated with two or three in Roman letters, sometimes in cursive script, within a laurel wreath cartouche, it is thought that such bottles were made specifically to order – the initials indicating the Christian and surname of the commissioner.
