Edo period, 19th century

 

woodblock print, surimono, embellished with metallic pigments and embossing, part of a pentaptych, signed Gakutei, privately issued circa 1823

 

Surimono, shikishiban: 19.8 x 18.5 cm., 8 x 7¼ in.

Looking askance

at the face of the moon

frogs are making

a sound like the gnashing of teeth

in the water of the pond

 

Tsuki no kao

shirime ni kakete

ikemizu ni

hagishiri o shite

kawazu nakuran
