The actor Onoe Matsusuke in the role of the Ghost of Kohada Koheji

Edo period, 19th century


woodblock print, signed Toyokuni ga (Pictured by Toyokuni), published by Shimizu, depicting the kabuki actor Onoe Matsusuke I as the ghost of Kohada Koheiji appearing from out of a standing lantern with the head of his wife, also played by the same actor, in his mouth; in the play 'Iroiri otogi zoshi' (alternative title 'Eiri otogo zoshi') by Katsu Hyozo I, performed at the Ichimura-za in the 6th month 1808


Vertical oban: 38.1 x 25.4 cm., 15 x 10 in.

The ghost of Kohada Koheiji appears from out of a standing lantern with the head of his wife in his mouth. This performance was part of the play Eiri Otogi-zoshi, performed at the Ichimura theatre in the 6th month, 1808.
