Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, from the series Kuniyoshi’s Analogies for the Six Conditions of Nature (Rokuyosei Kuniyoshi jiman), signed Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi ga (Pictured by Ichiyusai Kuniyoshi), censor’s seal aratame (certified), published by Uoya Eikichi, 10th month 1860

Vertical oban: 37.5 x 26 cm., 14¾ x 10¼ in.

As noted by The British Museum, this series pairs mythological and historic characters with auspicious and inauspicious days according to Japanese astrology. Here, beside a river Omori Hikoshichi is shocked to see the reflection of the beautiful woman behind him as a demon, and with a fierce expression prepares to draw his sword.
