Description

Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)

Bamboo Yards, Kyobashi Bridge (Kyobashi Takegashi)

Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (Meisho Edo hyakkei), signed Hiroshige ga (Pictured by Hiroshige), censor’s seal aratame (certified), block-cutter’s seal Hirotake (in the lantern held by a man crossing the bridge), published by Uoya Eikichi, 12th month 1857

Vertical oban: 35.5 x 24.6 cm., 14 x 9¾ in.

The full moon hangs in the sky above Kyobashi Bridge. The north-eastern bank of the Kyobashi River had a concentration of bamboo wholesalers, hence the upright lumbar lining the left-hand bank of the Kyobashi river in this scene. Many people are crossing the bridge and a man steers a boat of bags of rice along the river below.
