Totoya Hokkei (1780-1850)

Two surimono

Edo period, 19th century


each a woodblock print, surimono, embellished with metallic pigments and embossing, signed Hokkei, and comprising:

- Emperor Xuanzong (Japanese: Genso) and his concubine Yang Guifei (Japanese: Yokihi) playing sugoroku, from the series A Series of Sugoroku (Sugoroku bantsuzuki), commissioned for the Gogawa Poetry Circle, privately published circa 1820

- Tomoe Gozen with her horse and halberd (Tomoe Gozen), from the series A Series for a Gathering of the Elders of Poetry (Shoshikai bantsuzuki), privately published circa 1822

 

Both surimonoshikishiban:
