Description

Heap, George, and Nicholas Scull

An East Perspective View of the City of Philadelphia, in the Province of Pennsylvania, in North America; taken from the Jersey Shore ... Engraved from the Original Drawing sent over from Philadelphia in the possession of Carington Bowles. London: Carington Bowles, 1 January 1778

Engraving (plate mark: 279 x 432 mm; sheet size: 387 x 483 mm). On laid paper, full period handcoloring, with 14 numbered references.

One of the great early views of Philadelphia.

Based upon the Scull and Heap view of 1752, which was nearly seven feet long, this Carington Bowles version captures the main features of the city as it was, conveying the feel of an active port city. It was published during the British occupation of Philadelphia, and the war was probably the reason for the new edition, as it was for many revived maps and views. This is the first issue of the Bowles edition, dated 1778 (later issues are undated and published by Bowles and Carver).

Brightly handcolored in a thick gouache, the engraving was intended by Bowles as part of a series of prints to be used in a peep show or optical viewer. Operating one of the largest print "warehouses" in London, Bowles was able to secure Heap's painting, and this resulting print remains largely true to the original.

A lovely copy of a desirable view
