8vo (204 x 136 mm). Half-title, signed on the title-page; very lightly toned. Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered in silver, upper board blindstamped; lightly rubbed at corners and head and tail of spine, slight loss to spine lettering, browning to endpapers. In the original pictorial dustjacket with Lee Samuels' photographic portrait of Hemingway on the rear panel; light browning to spine panel, rear panel, and inside flaps, light wear at extremities with tiny nicks to head and tail of spine and at corners. Housed in a blue cloth clamshell box.
First edition of Hemingway's last major work of fiction, signed by the author. Written in Cuba in 1951 and published the following year, The Old Man and the Sea is perhaps Hemingway's most famous work—a book that was on the bestseller list for half a year and that earned him both the Pulitzer and the Nobel Prizes.
