A Mexican Gold Tinder Box with Striker, 16th Century and Circa 1800

rectangular, with sliding pierced cover, one side chased and applied with King Charles IV of Spain in a horse-drawn chariot below the words Viva Car.IV; the other side chased with a jaguar and quetzal in scrolling foliage and flowers, the top applied with a three dimensional bull fight and the ends with climbing dogs (coati?), the base fitted with an early steel striker, engraved on both sides with the following inscriptions So. AET. Sr. Dr. JUAN MAL.MUNOZ GUANAXTO 4 DE JUNIO 1589 surrounded by foliage and an alpaca,

This Mexican royalist token was made during the beginning of the Independence movement. Guanajuato was first visited by the Spanish in 1522, and the discovery of silver and gold in the location prompted settlement and development.
