The present work was painted circa 1878-81. According to the Lucerne exhibition catalogue van Gogh particularly admired this picture when it was in collection of Paul Gachet. Van Gogh was cared for by Gachet at his home following a period in an asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and in the final months of his life.
