John B. Chatterley & Sons was established in Birmingham in the 1850s by John Bishop Chatterley (8 September 1826 – 17 March 1907), a native of that city, who was originally a manufacturer of glass and japanned goods. As such he is recorded in the 1871 Census living in Walsall Road, Hansworth, employing 12 men, six women and three boys. By 1894, when Chatterley’s was registered as a limited liability company, with J.B. Chatterley as managing director and his two sons, Albert Edward Chatterley (1863-1946) and Frank Martin Chatterley (1868-1944), the business had become makers of silver and electroplate.
