Edward H. Stockwell specialized in "presentation swords and cup and bottle mounts in gold and silver". It started with H.W. Stockwell in Soho about 1820, and he was succeeded by his son in 1865, when Edward entered his own mark for the firm. In 1876 he won a prize from the Goldsmiths' Company for the design of a presentation casket, suggesting that the firm was responsible for the sophisticated design of this jug, despite the base inscription.
William Barker was listed as a "Diamond Merchant" at 164 New Bond Street in the Herberts' Metropolitan Handbook of 1875, and advertised at that address in 1872 and 1875.
