Hamilton & Inches were founded in 1866 by Robert Kirk Inches and his uncle James Hamilton. On the retirement of Mr. Hamilton in 1883, Inches acquired the Edinburg firm of Robert Bryson & Son, establishing themselves as probably the primary retailers in the city. In 1893 they received the Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria, and in 1915 the founder was knighted by George V.
The crest and motto are those of Burns of Broomhall, co. Dumbarton or Burns of Kilmahew, Cardross, co. Dumbarton.
