Description
A Rare Charles II Provincial Silver Caudle Cup, Thomas Cory, Warminster, Dated 1674
the bulbous body embossed and chased with a horizontal band of large flowers, one side pricked with initials P above S D E above D E 1674, punctuated by circles, beaded scroll handles, marked on base with maker’s mark T C in heart (half visible) and S over V in shield, requires restoration

The mark S over V indicates silver worth 5 shillings an ounce. Thomas Cory, from Cheshire, worked first in London, apprenticed to Edward Wade in 1646, turned over to Thomas Herbert and free in 1655. He later moved to Warminster in Wiltshire, where he took three apprentices. He maintained business premises in London , where he used different marks and became a liveryman in 1689 but died and was buried the same year (Timothy Kent, West Country Silver Spoons and their Makers, 1550-1750, 1992).
