Description
A Meissen Imari Octagonal Plate, Circa 1735-40
based on a Japanese original, painted with a bird on a rocky outcropping before a pine tree, the border with cloud-shaped panels reserving phoenix birds, the reverse with three large Imari sprigs, and concentric circles in underglaze-blue, crossed swords and K mark in underglaze-blue
width 8 3/4 in., 22.2 cm
Sotheby's Scientific Research department used noninvasive XRF for this lot to screen the green enamel for chromium, which was not detected.
