Description

A Large Silver-Gilt Mounted Ruby Glass Claret Jug, Probably Austria, Circa 1870-80

lobed pear-shaped glass body, on base composed of four grotesque masks, openwork neck mount below strapwork collar, hinged cover with female cupbearer finial, Janus-head thumbpiece, caryatid scroll handle, the lower handle mount chased with bearded mask and trophy, marked on handle with 13 and two crossed-swords marks

Height 14 in.

35.5 cm

Although the sort of pseudo-hallmarks seen here were common on Hanau silver, the Historismus decoration of the mounts is particularly close to those made in Vienna, and the modeling of the figural sections finer than much of the German 19th century work.
