A Charles II Silver Later-Chased Tankard with Christ Church College Inscription, Maker's Mark PM Between Two Stars in Quatrefoil Shield, Probably for Peter Monger (Mitchell p.435), London, 1687
later chased with sloping floral pendants and on later spreading domed base, gilt interior, marked on body, cover and handle, the base rim by R. Hennell, London, 1865

The inscription reads "Ch:Ch: Coll: Athletic Sports, 1868, Open Strangers Race ½ Mile C.B Lawes” which refers to Sir Charles Bennet Lawes-Willewronge, 2nd baronet, 1843-1911, English rower, athlete and sculptor, ancestor of the present owner. He became the 2nd president of the Royal Society of British sculptors. His monumental bronze sculpture The Death of Dirce is displayed at the entrance of the Tate Gallery. He did work for the scientific side of the Lawes Agricultural Trust, founded by his father.
