Fritz Scholder was a globally recognized artist enrolled in the La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians. Known for his charged subject matter and brilliant use of color, Scholder combined aspects of Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism to challenge cultural stereotypes of Native Americans. Indian in a Pueblo Interior is quintessentially Scholder in its nuanced, honest depiction of the subject as well as in its vast scale, flattened perspective and striking swaths of primary colors.

Scholder’s revolutionary style and subject matter attracted significant attention during his lifetime; his work was well received by audiences from Santa Fe to Paris. Today, his work is housed in major museum collections and has been the subject of numerous retrospectives.
