Chiharu Shiota's work is defined by a literal 'fil' rouge which is present in all of her work. In her 'State of Being' works, the artist takes objects ranging from the quotidian - such as books or doll's clothing - to the dangerous, as in this case. The threat of the pistol is, however, mitigated by its entrapment in an intricate cobweb of tightly interlaces black threads. Shiota represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 2015.

Le travail de Chiharu Shiota est littéralement défini par un fil rouge présent dans toutes ses œuvres. Dans ses installations 'State of Being', l’artiste prend des objets allant du quotidien – tel que des livres ou des vêtements de poupée – au dangereux, comme dans le cas présent. La menace du pistolet est cependant atténuée par son piégeage dans une toile d’araignée complexe réalisée à partir de fils noirs étroitement entrelacés. Shiota a représenté le Japon à la Biennale de Venise en 2015.
